Many of our Finland travelers ask us the same question: who are the Sámi people? The Sámi are indigenous people of the Arctic that live in the Northern parts of Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Kola Peninsula of Russia, which is also known as the Sapmi region. There are approximately 9,000 Finnish Sámi people today and they were first recognized as an indigenous population in the Finnish Constitution of 1995.

Reindeer herding is a central part of the Sámi culture. In fact, the Sámi year begins in May when the reindeer calves are born.
Traditional Sámi cuisine is based on local ingredients, such as reindeer, fish, berries, and wild birds.
Finland’s Sami Parliament can be found in Inari village, which is north of Rovaniemi.
